Congressional Serial Killer

So I have always mused this thought over.

But lets say that at some point in 2014, like even around the Midterm elections, it is discovered that a member of the house of representatives (even one that has been reeelected), is an actual serial killer. Doesnt have to have a massive body count, but like, 3 to 9 victims.

Removed from office and prosecuted like any other criminal. The House faced scrutiny, and internal investigation is undertaken to find out if any member was hiding the crimes, as will close political allies and the Party whip. Political Party will be tarnished, but they'll quickly seek to eviscerate the killer of party honors, and condemn them (expect a lot of 'No True Scotsmans'). Party will take a hit during the midterms.

Would make a good basis for a TL, I have to say.

When I first read the title, I thought it was a serial killer targeting Congressmen. In that case, if he killed enough, it might even increase Congress' popularity (due to sympathy factor). Yet, once caught, if he spoke eloquently of the evil he was trying to prevent, some people might see him as a martyr.

Ted Bundye would actually be a good choice as such a person, considering he had some involvement in politics.

My guess is the party wouldn't take as much of a hit as you think. People would (rightly) write him off as a lone nut rather than being part of a "party of serial killers" .

Pretty much. Damage control in a political party is good (hence why the Republicans still won after Agnew), although in modern days they'll still take a hit, given how fast information travels and how partisanized American politics have become. Unless the guy was being covered by numerous members, the Party won't be killed; I use the recent pedophile scandals in the UK as an example. Damaging at the time, yes, and can cost one or two seats, however in the long run it's a blip on the radar.
