Confessions of a First Time Voter.

Being a Democrat these days, I often wonder if things could be any worse.
Not to start things off on a negative. But with this blog, I hope to give you my honest opinion. I may be turning 18 next year, but I am reasonably well informed of the issues (the result of being in a political family I suppose). In fact, we're so political that my parents took us when we were 16 to pre-register to vote (one of the perks of living in Florida).
But living as a Democrat in Florida nowadays is...well not hard exactly. I mean I don't want to bring back Jim Crow or anything like that. It's just things have gotten so divisive now. A portion of the Republican base think of us as Socialists and Communists who should move to Moscow. Not that the USSR would have us either. Then again they have reformed significantly since the Cold War ended.
Then again only the older, more conservative Republicans do that. The younger Republicans, I've found, at least the ones I know, are more reasonable. We disagree on most of the important issues, but at least we know where the others are coming from. Now some of my friends think that I shouldn't concern myself with voting. That the politicians don't really care about us. Now I would agree, but even the worst politician does some good, if only to keep the people happy.
President Romney has done some good things like making improvements to health care and negotiating the end of hostilities in the Iraqi Civil War. But since he's not running for a second full term I won't concern myself too much with him. Still he did inherit a mostly good situation when President McCain died. At least that's what my mom says. My dad says that things are down now sure but they'll turn around. I'm not so sure.
Supply-Side Economics have never been tried before. Sure they originated with Ronald Reagan but still he lost in '76, so he never got the chance to implement them. But so far they haven't given the results that either Reagan nor Romney could have predicted. So there's that.
You may be wondering how I know all this. Well, I'm studying history with the aim to writing books. Maybe becoming a history professor. So I guess the reason I'm starting this blog is to give one student's, and first time voter's, perspective on this election.
