From the Script of Founding Fathers - deleted portions.

“Welcome to China, Mr. Marshall,” Chen Cheng said. “We are all glad to have you here with us.”

“Definitely,” George Marshall said. “While I was on the plane here, though, I’ve heard some concerning rumors-”

“Mao and Chiang, along with a bunch of other top officials, have died,” Chen said. “They died of different causes, strangely.”

Marshall paused. “My condolences. They were killed?”

Chen shrugged. “They were found dead.”

“Right,” Marshall said, shuddering. “Right.”

“Anyways, Zhou Enlai is here to welcome you, too.”

“Great. Er...who is Zhou Enlai?”

Another Chinese man walked out of a nearby room. “I’m Zhou Enlai, temporary Chairman of the Communist Party after Mao’s death. You must be Marshall. Welcome to China.”

“Er, right. So let’s get to the negotiations.”

“Right.”

“Right.”

The trio had finally reached an isolated room in the building. “Why do your parties have problems with each other?”

“They attacked us first,” Zhou clarified. “And now they’re extremely corrupt.”

Chen sighed. “The Communists are killing our people!”

“Your people are killing my people!”

“You guys are radicals!

“You guys aren’t revolutionaries anymore!”

“Ahem.” Marshall cleared his throat. “I’m still here, you know.”

“Right,” Zhou said, embarrassed.

Chen nodded.

“Back to negotiations, we’ve gotten the impression that the Guo Min Dang is corrupt-”

“-I will fix that,” Chen interrupted.

“-but the Communists are killing the landowners, too-”

“-Nothing wrong with that!” Zhou protested.

“-and the Guo Min Dang has divided the Chinese populace with its policies.”

Zhou nodded, while Chen shook his head fiercely.

“Our goal as negotiators is to form a coalition government to stabilize China after World War II. If this is achieved, American aid will continue.”

Both nodded.

“If one side refuses, American aid will go to the complying party. If both parties refuse...uh...we’ll be mean to you.”

Zhou looked at Chen cautiously, while Chen looked at Zhou suspiciously.

“Let’s outline our key points, then,” Marshall finished. “The first demand of the United States is a national army with no political stance.”

Chen immediately protested. “Mister Marshall, these Communists will backstab us if we don’t have-”

“Mister Marshall, the Communists didn’t need an army until the Guo Min Dang massacred us at Shanghai. I barely survived that.”

“This is the first and most important demand,” Marshall repeated. “A national army will be created with no political leaning.”

“As long as it doesn’t lean right, I’ll be happy,” Zhou said.

“As long as it doesn’t lean left, I’ll be happy,” Chen said.

The two glanced at each other - then back at Marshall. “I’m glad you two agree on that,” Marshall said. “Another thing we want is democracy.”

“The Communist Party believes in democratic centralism. Of course we agree!”

“Sun Zhongshan commanded us to believe in democracy. Of course we agree!”

“Just to clarify, we mean to talk about elections,” Marshall said.

“Of course!”

“Of course!”

“Okay,” Marshall said, obviously unnerved by the synchronization. “I’m glad you two agree on that point...”

Note: The above portion of the script was deleted because we (directors of the film) thought it sounded too boring. We’ve already shortened the negotiation time from 3-4 weeks to around 15 minutes. If the portion is necessary, we can add a fight scene to make it interesting...
