Compromise Spanish Succession

If this is a repeat I apologize.

WI Louis XIV and Leopold agree to a territorial offset for Philip succeeding to the Spanish Empire?

For example:

The Spanish Netherlands and Milan are annexed to Austria.
Sardinia, Sicily and Naples are given to Charles of Habsburg as King of Italy.
Archduke Joseph's descendants would rule in Austria while Charles' would rule in Italy.

The death of Joseph would result in an earlier War of Austrian Succession most likely. How might that turn out?

Would the Charles line Habsburgs be able to make a go of it in Italy over the intermediate to long term?

Thanks for your consideration.

Two points:
1)That is more or less what happened IOTL. After the War, of course, but still: Philip gained Spain, and austria gained the Spanish Netherlands, Naples, Milan and Sardinia (later exchanged for Sicily). So in fact, what you have there is even less of a compromie as IOTL - Bourbon would get Spain as IOTL, but the Habsburg acquisitions are not annexed to Austria. Seems to be the OTL peace was indeed more a compromise.

2)There was a compromise anyways. The heir of Bavaria (!) was to inherit Spain and the American possesions, while France would gain Sicily and Naples and Austria would gain Milan and the Spanish Netherlands. This compromise ended in naught when said heir died en route to Spain.

Not quite. Here's a map showing both compromises, the one before and the one after the death of the Bavarian prince. I can pretty much vouch for its autencity in regards to the former, having done a bit of research on the matter, with 2 observations: 1) the French were also to receive a small marquisate in Liguria called Finale (not shown on the map), and 2) it may not be obvious at first, but closer examination of the map shows part of the Basque Country (Guipuzcoa province) being lost by Spain.

And the Spanish netherlands would have staid Spanish, yeah. Which would make for a nice unified realm in western Germany should like IOTL all Wittelsbach sidelines die out - Southern Netherlands, Jülich-Berg and Palatine form a nearly continous territory. Though I didnt know that about the Basque territory. Intersting. Well, I always thought this would make intersting changes, but really, thats just what Germany needs, yet another partial territory in foreign (Spanish) hands...

Was the young prince set to inherit Bavaria as well? That would make Bavaria a worthy rival to Habsburg power in Germany. And France would love that... at first.

Interesting. So the Habsburgs made out way better at the Peace than they would have under the compromises. Too bad Charles VI lost Naples and Sicily and didn't leave an adequate military or treasury for his daughter. But he did build a lot of baroque structures thats for sure!

Yes, he was the heir. Of course the ensuing Empire would be called Spanish (even if WIttelsbach was called the House of Bavaria), hence my quip about yet more foreign lands inside Germany...

Yeah, but that is because Bourbon got the main price, Spain, even if techncially seperated from France.
