Compromise of 1877

So I'm reading up on this Compromise, and have a question. Apparently, various powerful men in the US feared the "Mexicanization" of American politics, where violence would be used to settle elections on federal and state levels. I suppose these fears were somewhat justified, as violence had broken out in the South over elections since the end of the Civil War. Anyways, if the Compromise had not been hammered out, what effects are possible? The Republican Party losing some votes in a tired North? Democrats becoming more violent? Hayes not being elected?

Was there really a compromise?

Afaics, all that really happened was that the Southern Democrats agreed to save Hayes' face by allowing him to peacefully take office in return for conceding out loud what the South had already as good as won. Not so much a compromise as a tacit acknowledgement of defeat, with the South agreeing to sugar the pill just a tad.

To actually answer your question, it depends what happens. The conflict over the disputed states would drag out until someone steps in. It's entirely likely that Samuel Tilden could have become President in some other compromise. If Hayes is eventually inaugurated, he will be entering office with even more opposition. Some Southerners could turn violent at the thought of being 'cheated' without a Compromise.
