*Completely* divided USA political Convention (post 1945)

Does anyone have any good scenarios where one of the major parties ends up with a *complete* divided convention (the sum of the delegates of the top two candidates is still not enough to get someone nominated) after 1945?

Not with a 1945 POD. It isn't possible anymore for two main reasons: a simple majority rather than 2/3 for nomination (Democrats in the 1920s are prime examples of what happens there), and after 1972 primaries, not bosses, choose an overwhelming majority of the delegates.

could be...

It would be pretty tough. Though the GOP of 2012 may try real hard to do it.

That might not even be A/H. But IMVHO, a divided convention of one side or the other is quite possible. If there's two candidates who each have a significant portion of the delegates--but not a majority--the delegates for other candidates have to jump in. But if a radical candidate refuses, on principle (real or imaginary) to give up his delegates, there could be a deadlock. Imagine a candidate that would rather bring down the system than give up--I can see some politicians that might think that way.

Is there a provision for that? And if the delegates refuse to vote for someon they don't like, neither can get a majority.

Such a scenario may play out the first few ballots at most, but the problem is that after the first ballot, delegates aren't bound to vote for their initial candidate - so eventually the delegates would be worn down by various factors - wanting to go home, doubts about sticking to the bitter end, and so on. The only way for a prolonged deadlock to happen would be if somehow a cult leader was the spoiler nominee.
