Communist party wins in 1996 Russian Elections

The communist party was pretty close to winning in 1996. What would happen if they managed to form a government? Would Russia make a re-Stalinization, or would they become a democratic communist state?

Re-stalinization? As far as purges go, i'll bet they'll only do as much as Yeltsin or Gorbachev.

The re-stalinize, Eastern Europe joins them and says "that was fun for a bit, now let's all kill the capitalists". ;)

And now seriously, how Democratic would Russia be under the Communist party? Better than today? Worse? How would it be seen by the world?

They try to move Russia in a Democratic-socialist direction while furthering Russian/Soviet nationalist aims in the region. For eample, expect ties to be renewed with Communist parties in former USSRs and rearmament on some level seems like a potential goal too. However, the CPRF will NOT try to rebuild the USSR.

One giant Belarus. Although Belarus in this TL would probably be referred to as a smaller Russia economically instead.
