Communist Finland

Sure that several threads have already covered, but interested on views of a Communist Finland (either as a Soviet Republic or as an USSR satellite)....any thoughts or previous discussions?

What if Finland became Communist in the 1920es ? This would possobly butterfly Finish Soviet wars. Wonder what the relations with the West would be.

There's IMO very little chance Finland would go Communist in the 1920s, at least if we think of a domestic revolution. The Finnish far left was too broken and weak for that after the Civil War. What you are actually suggesting, then, is "What if the Soviets invaded and conquered Finland in the 1920s?".

I'd have to agree. Even having the Finnish Socialist Worker's Republic as being the successful side in the Civil War wouldn't necessarily help make Finland more "Communist" - unless Finland becomes a European version of the Mongolian People's Republic in that case, similar entities were invaded by the Red Army and then incorporated into what became the USSR by treaty (am looking at you, Transcaucasian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic).

I think that only chances for Communist Finland were in 1939/1940 or if USSR would be able occupy Finland in 1944/1945. In 1918 it would had been very difficult. Reds hadn't much chances to win Finnish Civil War. They were totally unprepared and lacked any or had too few of combat experience. And Soviets were unable or even unwillingful help them much.

And how a Communist Finland would evolves until 1990? Something like a giant Baltic Republic?

Hard to say. It depends how exactly Finland would become communist, would Finland be part of USSR or Soviet puppet. There would be much of butterflies.

Thinking about a USSR takeover / occupation during the 1940s (WWII).....Finland would be annexed or kept as a satellite state, member of Warsaw Pact such as most of Eastern Europe?

An independently communist Finland following its own trajectory of socialisation and growth would be interesting, but the Reds having the capacity requires a POD that will probably distort a lot of other things.

Problem just would be that Finland would be very much under of Russian pressure. Red Finland should create some relationships with Scandinavian and Central European powers securing independence.

Red Finland= Sweden in NATO.

The other, almost as likely option is Red Finland = Finlandized Sweden.

This is to say that either Sweden runs to *NATO (butterflies mean that it is not exactly the OTL NATO) to seek protection against the USSR, or then, to avoid trouble with the Soviets, Sweden retreats deeper into *traditional* neutrality - a state of affairs which the USSR can use to influence Swedish politics and chip away at Swedish independence like it did with Finland.
