Communist country aligned with the West/USA

Would it be possible for at some point in the Cold War for the power bloc led by the USA to include a communist state? There's examples of communist countries like Yugoslavia and China that broke from the USSR led power bloc, but didn't join the West instead. I was thinking something like communists peacefully taking power in France and choosing to remain in NATO, or the USA backing Reds in some 3rd world country. Or is a knee-jerk reaction against the communists too ingrained in the culture of the Cold War for it too work out at all?

After 1968, most (big) communist parties in the west turned into the much more liberal 'eurocommunist' variety, which are far more egalitarian and so forth. If one of these were elected in they would probably be aligned against the USSR, which would be a hostile form of communism to them.

Using the power of hindsite, maybe we should have cut a deal with Ho Chi Mihn. Vietnam would have been unified from the start and under a communist regime, and possibly have a naval base for the USN to use. Although I'd consider such a Vietnam would probably be like Yugoslavia; neutral.

Good point, Kiat. Uncle Ho did ask the US for help to get rid of the French, and we did help him during WW II, but he was a Red Commie so that was that. Actually, he was much more Viet Nam nationalist than communist.
