Comics ban

In the 1950's when the Senate hearings on comic books occured, and many looked to Seduction of the Innocent as proof of the evils of comics, some thought of an outright ban on them.

What would America be like if comics had in fact been banned? More importantly what is the effect of literature, even if some consider it the most lowly form, is censored?

Well, we certainly have lost Stephen King, Michael Chabon, George R. Martin, Orson Scott Card, Johnathan Lethem, Brad Meltzer, Joss Whedon, et al. If anything, many of these authors have openly said that their initial interest in writing came from an effort to replicate many of the experiences that they had as children reading comic books.

Also consider that society would have probably had less tolerance for Jewish-American contributions to society or pop culture. Just consider that for many Americans, Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Joel Siegel, Joseph Schuster, Will Eisner, were the first exposures that many WASP Americans had to Jewish culture and ideas.

I think that if there was a comics ban, the big news story in '59-60 would be the Supreme Court case on the First Amendment rights of the comics industry.
