Colonies split into three unions

During the colonial era most observers classified the 13 colonies which would become the United States into three groups, New England with it's Puritan heritage, the middle colonies of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware which were very diverse ethnically and religiously, and the Southern colonies of Virginia, Maryland, the Carolinas, and Georgia which relied on plantation agriculture, slavery, and the exporting of cash crops. What would it take for these colonies to seperate into three different countries from the start based on this classification of the colonies? How would history move forward with a Puritan nation, an ethnically diverse nation, and south which is independent from the start spreading west? I could see the south dominating from the start with the advent of king cotton but eventually losing it's power when the world industrializes. I could see a southern empire in Latin America and maybe if they're lucky Africa, like a southern Congo. I would imagine that New England would rise to be a world power just because of New England culture's focus on educational and intellectual achievement. I also don't think that there would be as many immigrants to New England. Any thoughts on this topic would be appreciated.

It is pretty clear that the South would control the land that now makes up KY, TN, AL & MS but ownership pf the "Old Northwest" is less clear. Virginia and most of the northern states had competing claims. There might have been an early war that would have led to unification.
