Colonial Charters in America

What went into the thinking of how the colonies were set up. The Overlays of claims, the cores of them, etc? For example, how did Mass. get what is now the state and Maine? Like ideas for different states, could the colonies be differently shaped?

There is a book about how the colonies and later the American states got their shapes, and it is called, creatively enough, How the States Got Their Shapes, or something like that.

And yes, since a lot of the claims were conflicting things the colonies and later the states could have been shaped very differently. New York, for example, claimed all the way out to the Connecticut River, which forms the border between Vermont and New Hampshire and bisects Connecticut.

I've heard of this book, and seen the show on one of the discovery channels, but I'm thinking back further, to when the charters were initially being given.

"Maps, previous grants? So what; irrelevant details. I'm the king and what I say now is the way it is - until I say otherwise!"

Alright, since I'm sure most people here can read a map then. How would you realistically give charters to territory in the new world? Please be realistic in the borders, no wanking, and try and make them realistic for the time period or something. See how this works out. *crosses fingers*
