College Football Dynasty

The new College football season is upon us. There is a lot of talk about Alabama being the first college football team in the modern era (1970-) to win three National Championships in a row. Something I believe only Army , 1944-1946 has ever did. My what if is this. In 1996 the University of Nebraska was coming off two National Championships. The 95 team is considered the greatest team off all time. What if the Cornhuskers did not have the flu when they played Texas in the first ever Big 12 Championship game? They lost a close game (37 to 27) and later beat Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl 41-21. While Florida who the Huskers crushed the year before 62-24 got into the championship game (because Nebraska lost to Texas)and beat Florida State for the title. In 1997 Nebraska crushed a Peyton Manning led Tennessee for their 3rd title in four years. So with out the FLU Bowl, would Nebraska have won 3 , or 4 titles in a row?

If Nebraska went to the title game instead of Florida (who lost to FSU) and beat the Seminoles, they may have split it with 11-1 Ohio State at best, although Ohio State would have deserved it all by themselves like Michigan did the next year.

They beat Arizona State in the Rose Bowl, and the Sun Devils beat Nebraska that year. Also, they beat more ranked teams during the season.

Who did OSU loose too that year? The split title in 97 was strange. One reason why we got the BCS in the first place. The Pac ten and Big ten would not allow their Champs to go any other bowl game or allow teams like Nebraska to play in the Rose Bowl. Most football fans saw that Michgan in 97 barly beat an average Washington State team. It really helped that the QB for Michigan that year Griesie , Dad was the announcer for that Rose Bowl. Can't blame him though for wanting his son to get a National Championship. While Nebraska beat a very good Tennessee team that won the National championship the next year.

Ohio State only lost to Michigan in 96.

So they lost to a 8-4 Michigan at home. How? That had to hurt. OSU would have won the National Championship if they had not lost that game. Like the Corn Huskers losing to Texas. From 1993 -1997 Nebraska went 60-3 Three National Championships. 1 runner up (93) and the bad year 96 when they went 11-2 and won the Orange Bowl. Pretty much what Alabama is doing now.

They had a good run, but I think that they only should have won in 1995.

In 93, Notre Dame should have been playing them, not FSU, and I think they would have won. I don't think that Nebraska was the best team that year.

The next year, Miami should have defeated Nebraska, and that would have given Penn State the National title.

Their 95 team was great (although, I think that the 01 Canes were better and more talented), but in 96, I think that Arizona St. or Ohio St. should have won, and Michigan should have had it all to themselves in 97 (Nebraska won a game against Missouri because a WR kicked it to a teammate who caught it in the end zone on the last play of regulation to force OT).

I agree on 1995 Nebraska but I think their 1994 team was gifted the title as Penn State was a juggernaut that year. That's the reason why the BCS came into being. In 1997 we had something called the "Alliance Bowl" setup which was like a proto-BCS.

A better WI for college football would be if Penn State got a split of the 1994 national championship, as was custom whenever there were two unbeaten teams. The BCS probably gets delayed

In 93 Nebraska was ranked number one going into the Orange Bowl after Notre Dame lost to Boston College. Florida State was number 2 but a 18 point Vegas favorite. Nebraska totally dominated FSU sacking their QB Heisman winner 5 times. FSU's only TD would have been called back in todays world of instant replay. The Huskers lost when a last second FG went wide. Bobby Bowden said Nebraska was the best team they played all year and won ever where but on the scoreboard. The 94 team was basically the same team has the 95 team just a year younger. The Huskers at times played with a 2nd and 3rd string QB most of that (94)season They lost future ALL PRO Safety Mike Minter to injury early in the year. Yet still was able to beat Miami in Miami . The score was close but the stats were not. The 95 team well simply the greatest of all time. Thats not me talking but the so called experts and the Vegas line when the people who book make for a living picked the 95 Huskers to be a 7 point favorite over the good 01 Canes who beat the 01 Nebraska team easily. 97 team had some luck but played a lot tougher schedule than Michigan especially considering the 2 Bowl game matchups. Who would you rather play Ryan Leaf WSU or Peyton Manning Tennessee? My big question would have Nebraska beat FSU for the 96 championship if they had not lost to Texas in the FLU Bowl? I appreciate all the comments so far. Kinda of nice for me to talk sports AH for a change. On a personal note outside of the 95 Huskers I thought the 99 Huskers might have been their best team in that era. They went 12-1 but lost to Texas in a regular season game but came back and won the rematch in a BIG 12 Championship game. They ended up number 3 behind I believe 2 un beaten teams. Florida State who beat Virgina Tech.

They also were #1 in 2000, and were pressed by Notre Dame early in the season.

However, in OU, came the changing of the guard in the Big 12. The Sooners went on to win the title, and the Huskers began a slow decline, even though they did go to the NC game in 01, where they were thrashed by the Canes.

OU beat the Husker in Norman in 2000 and won the title pretty good team. NU returned the favor in 01 in Lincoln. Both teams tried the same trick play. The throwback to the QB. OU's QB I think got hurt on their failed attempt. The Huskers Eric Crouch scored a TD. I don't think they could have beaten Miami no matter how many times they played them. The 95 team would have but not the 01 team. OU has a good coach.
