I would like to see a timeline that has Henry Cabot Lodge actually pursuing the presidency in 1964, leading to him being nominated over Goldwater, and RFK being nominated for vice president as Johnson feels forced to after the nomination of a moderate Republican. This is a possible 1964 election I came up with,

Now I'm no expert on the time period, so I don't know where to go from here, which is why I thought it would be best to make a collaborative timeline where people can post their own ideas and such. I'm especially intrigued about the 1968 election and how Kennedy over Humphrey will change policy making. Also the effects of a Republican party not 'tainted' by Goldwater and how Wallace's '68 campaign will change from this scenario.

Thank you :D

You're going to get a lot of "Johnson would never..." to which my response is, Johnson may have rather died than put RFK on the ticket. But Johnson was also terrified the convention would run completely out of control and vote Kennedy to be the vice presidential nominee on a wave of support, so you could have that happen. Johnson was also potentially manic depressive and had a habit of going off in weird and contradictory directions depending on his day to day mood.

I apologize, I'm used to the 270towin maps, it's what I use for all of my maps. I can change it, but I don't know what program to use :(

You just need to change the legend on the right, that's what I saw first, so it looked like a republican landslide.

See the awesome Norton above for exactly my opinion.

Longer term LBJ and RFK will have the longest most bitter straight up insane four years against each other. Like I can’t even imagine what those four years look like without a day or two to think about it but it’s uh like not good.

You mixed up the colours, very confusing

Standard practice for AH.com is blue=Republican and red=Democratic for a number of reasons. The legend on the side is the right colours, the map is the wrong colours.

He'll do what he did with Humphrey when Humphrey dared to privately disagree on Vietnam: completely shut him out, sideline him, cut him off from direct contact with him, and make him regret ever taking the vice presidency. The difference being that Kennedy will not stand for it and there will be a behind-the-scenes War of the Roses in the White House with bitterness, factions, backstabbing and infighting all geared at Kennedy taking authority (not even the 1968 nomination but just attaining and asserting de facto power over the executive branch -- what JFK feared Johnson would do, which is why JFK shut out Johnson) and Johnson keeping his, crushing Kennedy and getting rid of him when the chance strikes.

Wow I'm stupid, is it possible to delete a post out of embarrassment? Didn't even realize the key didn't match the map, my apologies again.

Well, Humphrey is still a big figure in the Senate... would it be possible for Johnson to try to build a coalition of Southern and Mid-Western Democrats to try to undermine the influence of the East Coast party elite, thus checking R. Kennedy's attempts to gain power and purposefully boosting Humphrey's profile so he can be a "groomed" successor?
