Colin Powell runs for POTUS or Vice-Presidence in 2012.

What POD (point of depature) would be necessary, for Colin Powell, to make his bid in either the 2012 elections?

From what I gather, he is no neo-con lunatic and got his job as Secretary of State because he was up to it (but perhapse, some of you might proove that wrong).

Nope, I don´t have the impression this belongs to the future history section.

Should this thread be moved to the ASB forum?

Any thoughts?

he'll be 75 in 2012, the oldest man ever elected was Reagan at the age of 69 years old, McCain was 71 in 2008 and got a ton of flack for it, there's just no way.

Powell could absolutely not win a Republican nomination. Of course in an election with Obama as a candidate he loses his capacity to make any dent in the Democrat dominatin of the African American vote

He didn't run in the 90's or 2000 when he was at his prime to run for the Presidency (age-wise, and popularity-wise). He didn't think he wanted to go into politics, and therefore didn't. Why would he want to become President in 2012?

The only TL I recall this happening in is "World War Z". So short of a zombie outbreak, I don't see it happening. Maybe if the Mayan apocalypse happens, he'll have a shot, though.

He became a neo-con during the presidency of Bush the Lesser.

 not really, I'd say he shared some of their basic views, but never was a blind true believer like like say Rummy, I think Powell always felt bad about not going all the way in Iraq but the lack of planing and such in the 2003 invasion never sat well with him, thats why he quit in 04.

Problems with CP:

-As noted, age. Not a barrier by itself.
-What party? He alienated alot of Republicans during the Bush years and aliented more when he endorsed Obama. This passed spring Cheney commented he didn't even think Powell was a Republican. Also: The Dems don't need a candidate.
-His wife: Idk if she's still alive, but she vetoed his run in the '96. Her theory was he'd get killed trying to run. The situation's different now, we have a black president and no one's killed him. But she'd probably still veto it.
-Why now? If he really wanted to it would've been in the '90s.

In 2012, Powell will be 75. Ron Paul, on the other side, will be 77. There is no way either will be running for president. After all, Reagan was 77 when he left office as he oldest president, topping Eisenhower, the only other president to reach 70 in office.

Any POD that would have Colin Powell run in 2012 would probably have seen him run already in the 90's or 2000, nipping that 2012 run in the bud anyway.

Ron Paul win will in a 48 state-landslide against Obama. :p
