in 1960/61 the German Military lead by Franz Josef Strauß, made a Study, about how to deal in case of Cold War turn Hot.
There conclusion: it better to do a first Nuclear attack on Soviet Union forces, just instant before the a Crisis turn into full scale War !
That this action, would turn a Crisis into full scale nuclear war, escape those german Dr Strangelove's completely...

According "Der Spiegel" after meeting of Henry Kissinger with Franz Josef Strauß as Minister of Defence in that time.

Here becomes the "Der Spiegel" Affaire of 1962 a complete new aspect for me.
The issue 41/1962, publish a Article about Bundeswehr has to defend West Germany in case of full scale Invasion by Soviet Union.
With catastrophically results that NATO has to use Nuclear Weapons on German soil to stop them!
What follows is a charge on Treason to entire editorial staff of "Der Spiegel" and more violent Search and seizure of document at editorial office.
The German press start a complaint against this "return to the Nazi time"
In end it became public that Franz Josef Strauß as Minister of Defence had literaly take over the Ministry of justice, to deal with "Der Spiegel" !
he had to resign as Minister of Defence and went in exile in Bavaria for some years.
could be that Franz Josef Strauß was afraid that editorial staff of "Der Spiegel" had got a copy the "First Strike Study" ?

What would be the Impact if "Der Spiegel" had publish the "First Strike Study" ?
A political ice age in Europe against West Germany, because they even think to start a Nuclear War. Complete lost of credibility on West German politic.
inside west Germany Political hell brake lose, Franz Josef Strauß label as dangerous warmonger by press and opposition,
it will be the downfall of Government Adenauer and rise of Willy Brand as first socialist chancellor of West Germany...

Lucky for us that "Der Spiegel" Affaire happen, because on the other side:

I'm having a tough time understanding the OP*, but from what I can tell this scenario is ASB. The prevailing attitude in Germany and the Bundeswher is not going to permit them to successfully seize any of the nuclear weapons deployed on German soil. Indeed, the political atmosphere means this guy gets kicked the moment his plan goes public.

Even if they did manage to capture a missile and its warhead, they then have to hold onto it for several hours while they arm and prepare the weapon for launch. NATO does not need tactical nukes to stop them... they have enough conventional ground forces to retake a single weapons facility from a small number of attackers (and it would be a small number).

Nothing really new, Strauß was a kind of Darth Vader....evil to the core....think about Dick Cheney, but he never had so much power.....fortunately.

IIRC, Strauss was the same guy who had no qualms about arresting Der Spiegel reporters when they merely poked him, right? So if they leak a major classified study...

I'm German and my spelling is more german, than English.

What The Bundesswehr proposed was utterly ABS. But that Study was too outrageous and political dynamite.
Had it became public, It would deeply damage the new clean image of West Germany after World War 2.

Times were hard....and this kind of Uber paranoia and warmogering leeds sometimes exatcly to the result, which everyone wanted to avoid.
