Cold War and Space Race between CSA and USA

Hi I would like to create a Cold War and Space Race setting between USA & CSA,

First off were do I place the Union space launching platform, The CSA would be in Cape C.

In this world it's race to see who would like land on the Moon USA, CSA and other space nations.

Maybe outside Roswell, New Mexico where Robert Goddard perfected the rocket. The Goddard Space Center.

The Union could have occupied Panama in order to gain a commercial advantage over the CSA by building the canal. Panama's latitude is good for launching space rockets but a launch site on the South American mainland would be far more ideal. Perhaps the Union can purchase Guyana from the British or French Guiana from the French.

guyanna or guiana would be your best bet. or possibly Liberia? The closer to the equator the better!

The disadvantage of this location is that the wreckage of failed launch attempts might fall into Confederate territory, where it could be examined.

This happens in the Dixie TL from Gurps Alternate Earths. (And to make things more interesting, Imperial Germany, Russia and India are competitors.)

While a bit unrealistic, it had some nice bits.

Actually, I think Roswell ends up within the Confederate New Mexico/Arizona territory, as it is in the southern half of the state.

Panama is the better choice. Guiana is either an independent nation or a European colony depending upon when we are talking about. Liberia may work, but something within the Western Hemisphere is probably a better choice. Southern California?

Could Hawaii be a viable launch site?

Liberia wouldn't really work; to make the most of a low-latitude launch site, you have to go east, and east of Liberia is populated land.

What about Puerto Rico? OTL, it was considered and is a better site than Florida aside from the difficulty in transport, but that would be the place for anywhere else that makes a decent launch site.

Or possibly lease part of Baja California from Mexico, like Russia does with Kazakhstan?

Either the US pulls a France and launches out of some colonial possession, or launches out of New Jersey.

Amusingly, Atlantic City actually isn't a bad spot for the US to be launching rockets, geography-wise, and is a few degrees closer to the equator than Baikonur Cosmodrome, where the USSR launched most of its missions.

Sounds like a Harry Turtledove novel:D The CSA would have a massive advantage with a large domestic oil supply.
