What if there no new or newly revealed sex scandals in Bill Clinton's two terms.........and he doesn't try to allow gays in the military.

Does the lack of moral outrage n the Bible Belt give Al Gore a shot at winning the EVs of Misssouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee or Kentucky, won by Clinton two times?

Or is Gore and his party simply running into headwinds because of other factors like the dying off of people who remembered the New Deal and TVA, and the emergence of a southern oriented pole in the GOP from 1994?

Gore can win Arkansas if he deploys Clinto. To campaign for him there. Tennessee if he campaigns there enough. Could possibly swing Missouri if he campaigns enough there. Picking Gephardt instead of Lieberman could also help in MO as well. The rest I think are out of reach, and of the ones I listed I do t see Gore winning all of them.

I think it is significant that already in 1996, Clinton's margins, compared to 1992, declined in Missouri (from 10.2 to 6.3), Kentucky (from 3.2 to 0.9), Tennessee (from 4.7 to 2.4--a clear warning signal to Gore about the difficulties he might face in his home state in 2000), and even in Arkansas (from 17.9 to 16.9), http://psephos.adam-carr.net/countries/u/usa/pres/1992.txt http://psephos.adam-carr.net/countries/u/usa/pres/1996.txt The reason I say it is significant is that *nationally* Clinton's margin actually increased from 1992 to 1996.

OTOH, Clinton's margin for some reason increased substantially in Louisiana...
