Churchill vs. Roosevelt.

I was thinking about the interesting and contrasting personalities of Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt. Churchill, the hands on, in control of everything personality, and Roosevelt the more laid back, assemble a professional team and let them do the work personality.

Would they have been as successful if a Roosevelt (personality type) led Britain, and a Churchill (personality type) led the US?

FDR started acting like Churchill on 12/7/41
Presidential order to relieve Wake and the Philippines.
Personal visit to Pearl Harbor shortly after the attack.
Less or no lend-lease to the Soviets.

Probably less effective than OTL.

I happen to be one of those Americans who worship Winston Spencer Churchill. As a person whose family would have stayed poor white trash, without TVA we grew up worshipping President Roosevelt. I think each led their nation when no one else could.

Churchill gave the British the steel will to fight the Nazism hordes. I do realize he believed in Empire, which was perhaps not good. However, he was a lion.

As an Irish-American I can even excuse the Black and Tans.

President Roosevelt? Well he saved us. He kept many faction's together during WWII. If you listen to his speech on D-Day just wow.

To paraphrase, if Britain and America last 1,000 years they will be our best.

Roosevelt is in the company of Lincoln as our best.

Yeah but the things you mention are really more political (almost nationalistic) responses to the country at war. I would expect any leader to initially say those things.

Overall though Roosevelt did not involve himself (really maybe interject his opinion) in operational planning of campaigns.

Agreed, but what I'm asking is would the two countries have succeeded with the other style of leadership?

I think Britain would have been a tad more successful with Roosevelt whereas Churchill would have had the US going in all different directions and maybe ultimately not as successful.

That may be the impression you get from his books but the reality was slightly different.

In political terms, he managed Cabinet (whose members had their own power bases) and Parliament, but could be removed immediately by a vote in Parliament. On the military side he was very careful that he did not make anything happen against the advice of the Chiefs of Staff, although he could be very persuasive eg Anzio. therefore he had less power than Roosevelt, but involved himself in more detail.
