Churchill dies in 1938

Assume Britain fights on in 1940. Who would be Prime Minister? I think it possible that Halifax might have been over ruled even as Prime Minister by his colleagues.

I also think that without Churchill thinking he is a military genius Britain would have done better

How much worse would the Conservative Party have done in wartime by elections and in 1945?

Churchill was also keen to keep potential rivals for the Conservative leadership from the centre of power. Swinton was sent to West Africa, Lothian and then Halifax to Washington, Leo Amery at the India Office (though his son being a Nazi collaborator didn't help him) and Walter Elliott in less than key posts. Margesson made a scapegoat for military failures. Hoare sent as Ambassador to Spain. A more legitimate Conservative leader might have shortened the War significantly by using these men more productively in key posts.

Then Halifax is the only person available to be PM come May 1940. Which likely means a deal with Hitler and no WW2 as we know it.

It's crazy to think how close it came to that (Halifax being PM and making peace).
