Churchill avoids strokes

In otl Churchill hada serious stroke in, I think, 1953. It was clear he could not carry on really running things and he finally retired in the spring of 1955.

Without that might he have gone on and on?

No, because he was getting rather senile by that point and was minimally involved in domestic stuff even before 1953. The party would not want to push him out, but they would revolt before allowing a half-deaf, half-senile, 81 year old man lead them into an election campaign. Clementine wouldn't stand for it either- and IMO they would go to her as a last resort pre-revolt.

What's a miracle is him managing to get to 1955 as it was. When he regained power I believe the unspoken understanding was that he'd hand over to Eden within a year or two - however he kept finding excuses to put off the inevitable. Even without the stroke I doubt he would have held on for any longer than he did, too many Tories were getting restless.
