By what series of events would religious institutions be taxed by the government?
I understand that here in America a church is classified as a "non-profit" organization under 501(c)(3), thus they are not taxed.
And I know that for most of its history the Christian church had a huge influence on the government and policy itself (same with Islam, etc?).
So would any attempt at taxation even come up, or would it be stillborn? Cause religious conflicts? And what would the effects be if taxation was standard practice?
