Church Taxation by Government...How?

By what series of events would religious institutions be taxed by the government?
I understand that here in America a church is classified as a "non-profit" organization under 501(c)(3), thus they are not taxed.
And I know that for most of its history the Christian church had a huge influence on the government and policy itself (same with Islam, etc?).

So would any attempt at taxation even come up, or would it be stillborn? Cause religious conflicts? And what would the effects be if taxation was standard practice?

If you have the Church and State completely seperated, the government might be aggressively secular and insist upon it.

The key is that you can't really do it with Catholicism as the church is subservient to the Pope, not the state. Which is relevant if you want to do so early.

But you could feasibly have the Anglican Church, or similar "National" Churches be taxed. Heck, an alternative for the Anglican Church is that instead of flat out raiding them Henry VIII sets a high tax rate on them - based on their parishioners and relative tithes(?). If Henry can maintain that then it could lead to widespread support by other Kings to have similar National Churches and even support them during the Reformation.

I think that all property owned by any religious organization should pay basic tax for fire, police, streets, etc. They use those services and should pay for them and any business owned by any religious organization should also pay taxes that any other business has to pay including income taxes on any profit, of course it there is no profit, then no tax on th profit.

Henry VIII could set up a tax on the church as Head of the Church of England.
With this precedent settling into the new world and later United State.

Napoleon could do this in France, as he separates the church and throne.

Most other catholics nations won’t want to tax the church.

I see. It could be possible with the Anglican Church, etc.

I think that all property owned by any religious organization should pay basic tax for fire, police, streets, etc. They use those services and should pay for them and any business owned by any religious organization should also pay taxes that any other business has to pay including income taxes on any profit, of course it there is no profit, then no tax on th profit.
This makes sense and seems like the easiest way for them to be taxed.
