"christian" muslims?

Okay, we all know that jesus (or, Isa Ibn Maryam, as he's known in the Koran) plays a mjor part in the koran, and is revered as a prophet, the word messiah is even used in the koran. So, what if a muslim sect emerged who placed much more importence on jesus? How would a muslim "cult of jesus" be different from mainstream islam? How could it come about? What would the christian veiw of such a sect be?

Possibly they'd be the same as the Messianic Jews: they don't belong to either group, and while their scripture mostly consists of that of one group, they also believe in Jesus as Saviour much as any other (?) group of Christians.

The muslim reaction to them would be very negative, but most types of Muslims also hate most other types of Muslims, so that's a given.

They would probably evolve into a version of Islam similar to the Shi'a, who place a large emphasis on Ali, Fatima, Hassan, and Hussein (Prophet Mohammed's (PBUH) son-in-law, daughter, and grandsons respectively.) One could develop a history where the contemporary Shi'a form a Catholic-esque "adoration" of "Muslim" saints (as they in a way, do) of not only the Prophet (PBUH) and his "Holy Family of Islam," but also of other Muslim saints. Islam does have saints, you know. The prophets, their wives generally, miracle workers, and do-gooders.

But how to we get Isa ibn Maryam being the most important?

I did read somewhere that in the Ottoman empire some form of Sunni sect popular mostly amongst Balkan converts, placed Jesus in a much more important role than it has in traditional Islam. It might have been derived from the Bektashi sect... i
don't remember exactly...

My guess?

Something out of the European Adoptionist Heresy, common in (Unsurprisingly) 8th Century Islamic Spain.

If you hold that Jesus is the adopted son of God, then IMO it's easy to reconcile such an attitude with Islamic teachings, especially among new Muslim converts.

Where would this happen? My guess is you need an early fall of Byzantium or greater expansion in the West.

Very interesting. So, this sect would be popular in Spain?
