Christian Democratic ruling party in the US or UK

With a POD after 1900, is it possible for an explicitly Christian Democratic party to become the governing party of the United States or United Kingdom? Or is it too closely tied to Catholicism?

Well for one thing, I think the Conservative Party in the U.K. have a faction of Christian Democrats within their ranks, but discounting them...

...First things first, you'd actually have to have a Christian Democratic party to form in those countries much earlier than when they did in OTL. The U.K.'s first formal Christian Democratic party was...the Christian Democratic Party in 1999. The U.S. first Christian Democratic group was the American Solidarity Party, and that was only formed roughly eight years ago. You'd need to form it much earlier and be a little more vocal in their message.

What about a Democratic Party in the US that ideologically is a de factor Christian Democratic party? I think this is possible if the New Deal coalition survives, especially under someone like Robert F. Kennedy and the party uses a solidarist, Catholic social teaching type of ideology to weld together a multiracial working/middle-class majority of Catholic ethnics, blacks, Hispanics, and evangelical Southerners. You probably need a stronger American Catholic Church with a better hold on its members for this to be doable long-term imo.

I thought Christian Democrat was usually just the run-of-the-mill conservative party?

No, Christian Democrats are on the conservative side of the spectrum (they're regarded as social conservatives, and are centre-right on the right-left line, despite being more liberal/centre-left in economic/labor issues, civil rights and foreign policy), but not all Conservatives are Christian Democrats (and I'm not including countries where the population is not predominantly Christian either.)

I wrote a list where the Tories split under Heath into a more moderate faction under heath and a further right faction under Powell. This subsequent party became specifically Christian Democrat, especially after merging with a Gladstonian Liberal Party

The shift towards social liberalism and secularism in much West has left a lot of parties with a Christian Democrat past and section of the voting base but who are functionally liberals, save perhaps on law on order. Ireland's Fine Gael party which has essentially completely abandoned social conservatism is a good example.
