PoD in 1920s or early 1930s
Could Japan cooperate with Chinese warlords to help fight other factions and KMT while turning the warlords into economic satellites and Japan plans to eat coastal and central provinces of China and join the fight later?
More specifically Fengtian, Ma, Yunnan, Guangxi cliques to survive till modern day. Xinjiang could be given to the Soviets and Inner Mongolia to Mongolia in exchange for Northern Sakhalin and some little money/land/smth else.
I think that if the Japanese military can look domination of China as both economically domination and military conquest while planning diplomatically, they might succeed to an extent. Maybe the civilian came in and help plan with the army since they are not very insane yet.
I know that there is Open Door Policy, can't the Japanese supply/trade warlords with war materials secretly? The Japanese could send volunteers then declare war on the remaining government later when the China is considerably weak while logistics allow?
Just asking if warlords could change the course of Second Sino-Japanese war and if cliques will eventually develop their own identity.
