Republic of Canton? I would never have expected that! But you make a great point, I hadnt thought about the overseas Chinese, but they could really have a strong influence in a split-up China.

I dunno if they're overseas chinese or just people who use tor or I2P etc for their purposes in mainland china. Also links now that you are making me look for the places XD

The southern regions have that sentiment but I think even Chongqing (Siuchanese) have a similar sentiment

EDIT: look around the YT pages for more stuff. I saw some guy who wanted to ressurect Manchuko....something that does not seem popular...

EDIT 2: There are probably Han Chinese sentiments too of separation, as subgroups dont consider themselves 'han' etc etc

Remind me of SHadowrun and how they balkanised China. There was a Republic of Canton or something similar with 3-4 regions united, maybe with taiwan, a communist rump state, etc....

It only took a few posts for the Chinese exceptionalism crap to pop out. Of course China could permanently balkanize at some point in its history. Apparently treating anyone but China as special is bad, but China... thats ok!

Yes, China could have Balkanized several times in it's history and did. But this is the post 1900 forum, and we're talking ethnic lines. However if we ignore ethnic lines the easiest way would be to have the warlord era continue indefinitely. China would be split in several warlord cliques, and probably a KMT and Commie State too.

Well, given that the Republic of China claims most of the mainland presently...;)
Ah, but how much of the mainland could they realistically take is my question.

If 20th/21st century China is to break up and Great Powers tell Taiwan “take as much as you like” what provinces could Taiwan claim given the Taiwan’s manpower limitations and the sentiments of mainland Chinese?
