Charles the Bold

Regards all

I'd like to join some people in discussing a scenario for Burgundy surviving, and never being inherited by the Austrian Habsburgs.

Well options. Heres a thought, Charles the Bold, he was bold and maybe a bit rash, lets calm him down a bit. Maybe he's more pragmatic and doesn't get involved in so many conflicts.

Can we get Frederick III to crown him, creating a Burgundian kingdom.

We could give him a son, to inherit the kingdom - is this where ASB comes in.

If he's not so rash he doesn't get killed at Nancy, 1477.

Its not ASB, but you need a fairly good reason for Frederick to give him the crown of the kingdom of Arles or Lotharingia (I believe it was the former Charles was after).

I mean, what does Frederick get out of it. An overmighty not-subject on his western border.

Not appealing.

Good ol' Charlie was between a rock and a hard place, being France and the HRE. He'll have to do some fun dancing to keep one or both from knocking him down a rung at a time. Children and political marriages could certainly help, as well as having an heir, but point is France is dead-set on kicking Burgundy in the teeth. France is the one you'll have to worry yourself with in this scenario, and keeping Burgundy from getting so high-and-mighty that Maximilian or some other HREmperor doesn't decide to ally against it.
