Charles Stuart

He was the first son of James, Duke of York, the future James II of England, and his first wife, Anne Hyde. He was born in 1660 or 1661 but died in infancy. WI: He had survived to adulthood. He would have been brought up as a Protestant. Would Charles II have favored him as the heir to the throne instead of his father James?

If this child survived infancy I'm going to guess he'll secretly be brought up a Catholic but James, Duke of York. Anyway Charles II was secretly a Catholic and 'converted' on his death bed, so I can't see why he'd be picked over James.

Charles II had demanded and saw to it that James' two daughters were brought up as Protestants. I can see him demanding that James' son is raised as a Protestant as well.

I find that odd :S But oh well fair enough. Then yes, I could imagine Charles II choosing James' son over him.

I don't think Charles would favour James' son over his brother. While he might think that the Protestant son of James might appease more the Parliament, Charles also firmly believed in the Divine Right of the kings. For him James would be his legal heir, and only after his death his nephew would be king.
Also, even from a Protestant point of view it might be acceptable. The Parliament might accept a Catholic king as James as long as they know it would be temporary, because they would be sure that James' son is a Protestant.
