Charles de Gaulle crashes in 1944

so I'm reading "Is Paris Burning" about the end of the occupation of France, any ways in it the authors state that de Gaulle planned on returning to France on 14 June 1944, thanks to deep fog and his fighter escort not showing up de Gaulle's plane was on the last of it's 4 fuel tanks, and the pilot wanted to land in England, but de Gaulle said he would only land in France which they managed to do, with 120 seconds of fuel left, so what if it had taken just 2 minutes longer to find an air field or to get to land and de Gaulle's plane had crashed killing the General?

It would mean difficult times for post-war France. The country might be soon on civil war between different factions, speciality communists and pro-Wallies.

The bastards' visit to Quebec in the sixties gave a pretty big uplift to Quebec separatism. Without that stunt secession might not have become such a huge thing, with nationalism instead developing along the lines of promotion and protection of Francophone cultures within a united Canada.

Relations between Canada and France would most certainly be better throughout the Cold War and into the present than in OTL.

unless France goes Communist.

I think the biggest impact will be on post-war France. The course of WWII will be minimally affected at best, depending on who takes over for him (Giraud, Muselier etc.)

However without the looming figure of De Gaulle to swoop in as a "Saviour", the French Right might just have to learn to work within the system of the Fourth Republic. Perhaps in TTL we get a genuine Christian Democrat party rising up in France to take the place of the Gaullists. With a more pliable party system we might not see a 5th Republic. Furthermore, without De Gaulle's Napoleon complex, France probably never develops the nuclear bomb (nuclear power yes...) and stays in NATO.

Of course it could just as easily end up being the complete opposite...

Not necessarily. We enjoyed fairly good relations with Cuba through the Cold War. Fidel and Pierre Trudeau in particular were on good terms with each other.

I believe by 1944 the plans to place France under military occupation after it was liberated had been shelved. However, that was because De Gaulle had convinced them he was capable leader.
They'd probably go with a civilian government, albeit under close Allies supervision.
