“She is my Eleanor of Aquitaine” ~ John I of England
Douce II b.1165 was the daughter of Ramon Berenguer II, Count of Provence, and Richeza of Poland. After her father died trying to conquer Nice in 1166, she inherited the County of Provence.
She was immediately opposed by her uncle, Alfonso the Chaste, King of Aragon and Count of Barcelona, who alleged that because her father had no male heirs, his county passed to him. In 1166, he took control of Provence, forcing her out, she is affianced to the Count of Toulouse.
In 1171 Henry II set an alliance with Humbert of Maurienne adding one more enemy of Raymond V to his alliance. In 1171, the bride of Raymond of Toulouse, the son of Raymond V of Toulouse, Douce, the young claimant to the county of Provence was kidnapped by Henry II, seeing that the bride of the Raymond is valuable to Eleanor’s claim to Aquitaine.
The kidnapping and betrothal of Douce would result in a war between England and France because France supported Raymond as they believed that the marriage was a violation of the feudal ties of Henry II with France led by Louis VII, however, Louis VII is defeated by the Angevins.
On 1184, John Lackland is married to Douce II the claimant countess of Provence, as Richard had already refused marrying her and seeing that he never liked women and chose the fair Berengaria of Navarre, seeing that, Eleanor made her younger son, John the County of Poitou and his father gave him the County of Anjou, they said that John lackland and Douce II’s Provence’s marriage is similar to the marriage of Constance of Brittany and Geoffrey, Count of Nantes, marriage, the two liked each other.
At the time of her marriage to John, the 19-year-old Douce was already renowned by some for her beauty, she assumed the name Eleanor upon marriage as she idolized Eleanor of Aquitaine. Her mother-in-law, Eleanor of Aquitaine readily accepted her as John's wife.
