Chaos Timeline – Kasumigenx Version – or how a Kidnapped Princess, changed history

“She is my Eleanor of Aquitaine” ~ John I of England

Douce II b.1165 was the daughter of Ramon Berenguer II, Count of Provence, and Richeza of Poland. After her father died trying to conquer Nice in 1166, she inherited the County of Provence.

She was immediately opposed by her uncle, Alfonso the Chaste, King of Aragon and Count of Barcelona, who alleged that because her father had no male heirs, his county passed to him. In 1166, he took control of Provence, forcing her out, she is affianced to the Count of Toulouse.

In 1171 Henry II set an alliance with Humbert of Maurienne adding one more enemy of Raymond V to his alliance. In 1171, the bride of Raymond of Toulouse, the son of Raymond V of Toulouse, Douce, the young claimant to the county of Provence was kidnapped by Henry II, seeing that the bride of the Raymond is valuable to Eleanor’s claim to Aquitaine.

The kidnapping and betrothal of Douce would result in a war between England and France because France supported Raymond as they believed that the marriage was a violation of the feudal ties of Henry II with France led by Louis VII, however, Louis VII is defeated by the Angevins.

On 1184, John Lackland is married to Douce II the claimant countess of Provence, as Richard had already refused marrying her and seeing that he never liked women and chose the fair Berengaria of Navarre, seeing that, Eleanor made her younger son, John the County of Poitou and his father gave him the County of Anjou, they said that John lackland and Douce II’s Provence’s marriage is similar to the marriage of Constance of Brittany and Geoffrey, Count of Nantes, marriage, the two liked each other.

At the time of her marriage to John, the 19-year-old Douce was already renowned by some for her beauty, she assumed the name Eleanor upon marriage as she idolized Eleanor of Aquitaine. Her mother-in-law, Eleanor of Aquitaine readily accepted her as John's wife.

At the same time, the emperor stayed in Capua, where he had Count Richard of Acerra, held in custody by his ministerialis Dipold von Schweinspeunt, cruelly executed. He entered Sicily in March 1197 and applied himself to prepare his crusade in Messina.

Soon after, the tyrannical power of the foreign King in Italy spurred a revolt, especially around Catania and southern Sicily, which his German soldiers led by Markward of Annweiler and Henry of Kalden suppressed mercilessly. His wife Constance of Sicily fell with chills, in Messina, although it is also widely believed that she was poisoned.

At first Henry VI was concerned to lose his French allies; but when he realized that an English marriage might end the ongoing Anglo-French feud and also end the captivity of King Richard. The betrothal was formalized in London in February 1198, she was betrothed once to Frederick of Austria.

Her uncle, Richard gave the Ten thousand marks Frederick insisted on as Eleanor’s dowry and his own release.

The beautiful Eleanor was about Sixteen years old in 1200 when she set out to marry the once-widowed Emperor Henry VI, who was almost Thirty-Four. On her way through Cologne, she delighted the local women when she removed the traditionally worn veil so that they could see her face, her sister Mathilde at this time has been married to the King of Leon, while her cousin, Berengaria is married to the Count of Toulouse as his second wife[note].

The marriage between Eleanor and Henry took place in Worms Cathedral on 15 or 20 July 1201; in the ceremony, she was also crowned Holy Roman Empress, Queen of Germany. She was granted the castle of Monte Sant'Angelo by her husband upon her marriage.

However, as soon as she was married she was added to the Emperor's harem, which included women from Arabia attended by black eunuchs. Their marriage had been a political match, and she was allowed to keep only two of her Breton women-attendants, the others were sent home.
