Star Wars: The Last Jedi
(Actually I want to rewrite the whole movie but hey....)
Battle of D'Qar or Rian Johnson remembers that the word ‘War’ is in the title
Back ground: Resistance fleet attempting to evacuate the planet following the battle to destroy the planet killer in Star wars: 2.0…I mean…Star wars: The force Awakens.
The Resistance is evacuating the planet as quickly as possible and a hundred odd atmospheric vessels of various size and shape are rising and descending between the fleet (centered around the and RAF Greenham Common…I mean the top secret rebel base.
General Hux arrives with his fleet of star destroyers. Wham,wham,wham-wham-wham the ships appear immediately in and among the Resistance fleet.
His Intel has revealed where the base is and that the Rebel fleet only comprises 4 warships and a number of transports – easy meat for his 5 Star Destroyers and in order to ensure that none escape and that the Resistance is finally crushed he brings along a rare Interdictor Star Destroyer (any fans of the star wars universe will know that this vessel generates a field that makes it impossible for ships to enter hyperspace for those that are not….well its vessel that generates a field that makes it impossible for ships to enter hyperspace) that will prevent the rebels from fleeing.
He also brings along an equally rare ‘Dreadnought’ Star Destroyer a vessel capable of entering the atmosphere of a planet and surviving ground based defenses due to its very heavy armour while at the same time being able to land a sizeable force of Storm troopers and supporting AT AT’s and other walker variants as well as having weapons capable of fighting back at said defense’s
So the earlier scene starts with Hux talking to some shadowy character who is telling Hux of the Rebel presence and their strengths and Hux orders as many of his ships as possible to rendezvous for an attack.
The Attack / battle of D’Qar
The 5 Star Destroyers exit Hyperspace – in an arrogant display Hux has them come out of Hyperspace ‘danger close’.
But he has erred badly – for the Rebel fleet is actually stronger than he was told and instantly the fight descends into utter chaos – and Hux his ships under heavy attack and his arrogant smirk replaced by shock and fear is screaming for help – i.e. those ships that were too late to join the attack to come to his aid ASAP.
General Leia Organa has been doing the same but few if any answer – but they get word that 1 has answered
The better rebel fighters immediately begin to take a toll of the simpler but far more numerous New Order Tie fighters.
Poe Dameron – groups the fleets B-Wings and Y-wings and leads them on a ‘flanking attack’ on one of the Star destroyers utterly wrecking it. (none of that very very very very very slow B29 Space Bomber BS)
At this point General Leia Organa realizing that she has to keep the resistance alive orders the fleet to disengage – despite the chaos on the Bridge and many wanting to buy time for the remaining forces on the planet to evacuate – but she has already worked out the grotesque math of staying and calms the situation and Admiral Akbar (who was actually there not – that you would know) pipes up agreeing with her and lays the cold facts and then orders the ships to prepare to depart.
At that point the Interdictor Star Destroyer appears and any option to jump to hyperspace now denied them.
Several more Star Destroyers arrive and the fight begins to turn against the resistance despite their earlier victories.
Poe Demaron with his fighter squadron also realizing that the Interdictor will effectively kill them leads another attack by the remaining heavy fighter bombers of Colbolt Squadron and again they manage to fight their way to the ship and heavily damage it – knocking it and it’s Anti Hyperspace Generators out of commission.
At this point the Dreadnought appears coming out of Hyperspace directly into the Atmosphere.
Despite a direct order from General Leia Organa to fall back and defend the remaining main fleet units Poe seeing the dreadnought wiping out the evacuation ships as well as taking the base under direct fire leads his fighters and the remaining Cobalt Squadron ships down into the atmosphere to attack it in what is effectively a 3rd and for Cobalt Squadron a final attack run
During the attack most of the Rebel fighters are destroyed but Paige Tico (Roses sister), Her B-wings launchers empty and her fighter utterly wrecked kamikaze’s her burning ship into the Dreadnoughts heavy lander bay busy with heavy drop ships and landers for the impending ground assault and using the force to guide her, rams a munitions barge setting off a predictable 'Full Hollywood' chain reaction that guts the massive ship and it begins drop towards the planet wreathed in flame and sympathetic (or unsympathetic) explosions.
While this allows for the surviving evacuation ships and personnel to escape to the ‘relative safety’ of the fleet in orbit, Po having taken so many ships to fight the Dreadnought has left the capital ships vulnerable to the rapidly dwindling numbers of Imperial Tie Fighters and it is at this point where Kylo arrives in his pimped out super tie fighter, manages using the force and detecting his mother, to target the Bridge of the Resistance Flagship and after ordering some of the remaining tie bombers to target that part of the ship locally bringing down the shields at the expense of their own destruction before Kylo makes his own attack destroying the Bridge ‘killing’ everyone there (including Admiral Akbar – who was actually there by the way) with Leia sucked out into space.
At this point when all appears lost – but then Admiral Amilyn Holdo (the only ‘ally to answer Leia’s request for aid) turns up with her Heavy Mon Calamari Battleship ‘The Dawn of Tranquility’ with her XO (and secret lover ‘DJ’ who is her 2nd in command and a vagrant code breaker - who is secretly sharing information with Hux in order to keep Amilyn alive and was trying to keep her from coming to the aid of the rebel fleet as he no longer has faith in the ability of the Resistance to beat the New order - dun dun dun).
THUD!
It arrives with pin point accuracy right in the middle of the battle and immediately starts to turn the tide with its vast firepower engaging several of the enemy Star Destroyers.
Now the Dawn is easily more than a match for Hux’s ships especially as many of them are heavily damaged and with most of his fighters destroyed and with the ‘Dawn’s’ own fighters now dominating the ‘snub fighter’ battle Hux orders his fleet to disengage.
Kylo gets into a dust up with Po (who has returned to the fleet battle) as well as another X-wing Pilot Starck and an A wing Pilot Tallie (the 2 pilots snuffed out without even being introduced when the hanger is destroyed in the original her they get a more meaningful part) – unable to dominate all 3 ace pilots and in danger of being killed Kylo orders several remaining Tie fighters to engage them as he makes his escape back to Huxs flagship (much to Huxs annoyance).
The surviving New Order fleet ships quickly jump out in ones and twos leaving a pair of crippled Star Destroyers to be totally rinsed by the remaining Resistance fleet
Most of the lighter vessels – corvettes and transports etc have been destroyed or crippled in the short but savage close range fight and with the last of the surviving evacuating ships from the surface having reached the fleet the remaining capital ships – now 2 Mon Calamari Cruisers and half a dozen smaller - Leia comes too and does her space witch thing and manages to save herself - at this point the ships undercommand of Admiral Holdo orders the ships to jump out to safety...or so they think.
