Chancellorsville: If it had been a bigger Confederate Victory

In the story, they had shifted ships to the Pacific. Now, it's really a mote point in the story besides it's Russia declaring War, making the US happy.
Uhm, the Russians had trouble with bringing the black sea fleet to the pacific in 1905 to fight the japanese. I highly doubt that it would be possible to sustain an expedition corps or even an army in French east asia, especially, since without the Transsibirian Railway, the supply lines go once around africa through the meditereanian and to the black sea. Oh and did I mentoin that the black sea at this point of time was a neutral sea meaning the russians had no fleet there and the British and French would have immedialty intervened when they build some or even threatened to pass through the Bosporus?

Sorry, but this would never happen. Russia has absolutely no ability to take possession of the French territories in Asia, even if the French made no effort whatsoever to defend them (which they obviously would). Besides which, Russia was dealing with a major uprising in Poland during the American Civil War and was trying to stay on good terms with the French to make sure they didn't throw their support to the rebels. The last thing Russia would want in the 1860s is a conflict with France.

As for the United States "owing" Russia for its aid, what on Earth can the United States offer that would be of the slightest benefit to Russia?

Well, I guess that blows that out of the water. :( Oh well. My research didn't show that, but then again I was more concerned with how to pull off a Pacific war. Good thing it's in my third book so I can change it without too much trouble.

As for owing the Russians though, politicians are also thinking of long term goals just as much as immediate gains. Who knows what the US could eventually have of interest?
