Challenge/WI: Democratic Nominee Jerry Brown in 1992

Despite candidate Bill Clinton labelling himself "the Comeback Kid" in February 1992, former Governor of California Jerry Brown seemed on the verge of besting Clinton at the nomination. He was the "grass-roots" candidate before a certain Ross Perot even officially entered the race; however, he made a rather stupid gaffe regarding Jesse Jackson that cost him the remaining primaries, and, eventually, the nomination.

The challenge is to have Jerry Brown become the Democratic nominee for the 1992 presidential election; also, what repercussions would come of that? Who would he choose as running mate, and how would he react to Bush and Perot? That's all down to you; you can make it as complex or simple as you want; trace the after-effects up to a point long after, or even just make a simple prediction... anything you want. :)

...so, get at it! :D

Keep Tsongas out of the primaries. His voters shift to Brown.
But Brown ended up forcing Tsongas out, anyway; he didn't really matter, by the end of it.

I think a campaign team more effective at keeping Brown from saying the wrong stuff to the wrong audiences could've helped him get the nom, personally.

But Tsongas voters made the difference for Clinton in some states.

Hmmm I don't know an awful lot about Brown, but it's interesting that a good few TL's on here have him team up with Perot in 92-most notably in 'A Giant Sucking Sound'. With this in mind, I wonder whether Perot might consider staying out of the race in favour of Brown? Probably not, but it'd not be out of the question.

I'm not sure who Brown would pick as his running mate either-Clinton maybe, if he does well enough in the primaries? Maybe he picks Gore, Doug Wilder or Anne Richards maybe?

I think the election would be a lot closer than OTL-it's possible that Brown wins, but I'd give the edge to Bush.

Assuming Brown does win though, would he push for Health Care? I'd expect the Contract With America to be more successful ITTL.

That said, unless Brown screws up bigtime, the economy will win the day for him in 96, like it had done for Clinton.

Brown probably would have gotten a lot of votes that ended up going to Perot, potentially picking up a few states in the Mountain West, but underperformed Clinton in the Southeast. As President, his tax reform proposals wouldn't have gone anywhere, but you probably would have seen elements of the Contract With America in 1993-1994, preventing much of Newt's Republican Revolution. This would mean the Democrats having a more populist, reformist streak going into the 1990s, and probably a return of Reagan Democrats, particularly if Brown ended up blocking NAFTA.
