Challenge: Vietnam a Tiger

How can Vietnam become one of the East Asian Tigers with a POD of 1945? Probably need a unified Vietnam or the South winning the Vietnam War. Discuss.

Well, honestly the PoD does'nt actually need to be that early for it to happen really.

But, have the two sides reconcile (perhaps as the two superpowers grow weary of the war) and create a economic system.

After that have them for a few decades start focusing on industrialization and improvement of living standards, education and create a diversified economy with both specialized and general sectors.

In pretty much any TL in which the war doesn't take place, either South Vietnam or the whole country is quite likely to become a Tiger. Taiwan and South Korea took off economically while they were still authoritarian and fairly corrupt, and China provides evidence enough that even a nominally Communist dictatorship can become an economic powerhouse once it gets a reasonably pragmatic leadership.

You have to first somehow make sure that the French did'nt attempt to do their best to Screw Vietnam over during independence by attempting to get it partitioned. Secondly, if the USA treated Ho Chi Minh as more of a Nationalist than a Communist( And Ho was infinitely more pragmatic then the likes of Mao, not to mention the fact that he was more nationalistic than communist in many many ways) , and exploited the traditonal Vietnamnese distrust of the Chinese, then the Vietnam War Get's entirely butteflied away, and Vietnam forms part of the Southern perimeter of the Containment strategy against China.

Oh , and the same generous trade terms the Koreans were given.

Anything that gets farmer-oriented communists out. As stated, corrupt tyrannies are okay, as long as they're greedy corrupt tyrannies.

Nov. 1, 1963- As the coup against the Ngo brothers gets underway, Nhu begins a countercoup. In OTL it failed because a key general betrayed him. By day's end, loyal units have rescued them and Duong Van Minh has been executed by firing squad. Now we can have the rumoured "live and let live" agreement that the Kennedy admin thought he was negotiating. Discuss. Alternately, the ARVN doesn't panic in the Central Highlands in 1975, the line is held since the US has given them better planes such as A-4 and F-4 with C-130 tanker conversions and ECM. Thieu wins the scheduled 1975 election with 78% of the vote.

POD 1945?

Well the Nationalists win the Chinese Civil War and manage to crush the Communists killing Mao Zedong and a whole bunch of other Reds. Due to this the Communists in Vietnam are in a worse position. France wins the colonial wars crushing the Vietcong but still grants independence in the late 1950s. With Ho Chih Minh dead due to French attacks, a corrupt nationalist cabal takes over and brutally suppresses Communists with US support. They succeed for the most part and the US helps develop Vietnam along with China. The Vietnamese economy industrializes and takes off and by the 21st Century is prosperous as Malaysia or Taiwan or South Korea.
