Challenge the US a one party Democracy

Could the US under its current Constitution have had single party domination?

I do not mean on the Fascist or Communist model. I assume that there are several legal parties but that the dominant party candidate for President can be as confident of victory as say the Conservative candidate for South Kensington in the 1950s.

Obviously there would be a lot of competition within such a party but I am assuming that it is more subtle that simply 2 competing factions

Well, we kinda had this in the late 1810's to 1830's with the Democratic-Republicans and then from the 1830's to 1850 with the Democrats, with the occasional Whig exception.

Then we had it again from 1860 to 1932 with the Republicans, with a Democrat president every once in a while.

I suppose its possible to eliminate either of the major parties at some pivotal points in U.S. history...

1860s - The Democratic Party falls apart as a result of successful Republican campaigns of 'waving the blood shirt', associating the Democrats with the treasonous Confederacy, and expanding their own power by impeaching President Johnson. The nation develops under one party Republican rule until 1912, when Theodore Roosevelt and other left-leaning Republicans bolt the party to form the Progressive Party in 1912, which calls for an end to military occupation of the South, a strengthened U.S. foreign policy, and liberal economics...

1930s - FDR wins all 48 states in 1936, thus causing the slow implosion of the Republican Party, with its eventual dissolution in the 1940s. The Democrats enjoy a period of one party rule until 1968, when conservative George Wallace wins the Presidency as a member of the newly formed 'American Party', which promotes social conservatism and economic conservatism, as well...

McCain wins the Republican primaries in 2000 and is elected President. He serves two excellent terms becoming one of the greatest Presidents. He's succedeed by Colin Powell or George W Bush which eventually results in a long Republican period of domination.

Well 1967-1993 only had Carter being a Democrat or in that regards from FDR to LBJ the only Republican was a two-term war hero.

I know! In 2000, Al Gore gets elected president and easily wins reelection. After yet another loss in 2008, the Republicans split apart leaving a Democrat world until 2012 when Thande becomes president under the Alternate History political party. That party then goes on to have other great presidents like Ian the Admierable in 2020, The History Keeper in 2028, and Glen in 2032. Such a political party is then found unconsitutional and the Constitutional party emerges.

What is needed here is a complete change in American society.

Basically we need to get rid of

1950's Beatnick culture
1960's Hippies and counter-culture, Vietnam War
1970's era stagflation and Iran hostage crisis

results no Reagan Revolution the US stays a Progressive society. Christians fundamentalism stays out of politics.

No the Republicans are still an effective opposition. Barack Obama must keep all his party in line( a very difficult thing to do)or the Republicans could block legislation, appointments, etc etc.
