Do you think they may be one of the surviving large predators?

No. In Africa they're hated by the locals to a degree that the big cats are not. In addition to this they are noisy, sociable and carnivorous. I think it's possible that the striped hyena could persevere, due to the fact that it is a solitary scavenger, but its spotted cousin doesn't stand much of a chance.
 
Large, carnivorous, pack hunter, obvious presence, unable to tolerate a close human presence, very destructive to livestock.

I'd say if any animal fulfills more than three of those categories, it will be extinct in the wild within the next couple of centuries.

Carpathina wolf has seen some reeemergence in recent decades being spotted in fair numbers along the whole range of Carpathians. And really Carpathian mountains are never going to prime urban area.
