Challenge: Spanish invasion of Denmark

Based on a strange conversation I had with work colleagues earlier...how, with a POD after 1500, can Spain attempt (not necessarily successfully) an invasion of Denmark?

Warning...implausibility alert...

The Armada gets lost. They sail to Denmark and land eleven gunmen. The Danish retaliate and kill the troops; Spain ends up at war with Denmark and England.

Dang, you got there first. Really bad winds in 1588 could lead to this, along with a blind navigator...

Or, take another easy way out, and have utter Spainiard wank. If they conquer France and Germany is still divided, then they can sweep up into the Danish lands.

Another way: we all know that with enough work, the alliance system of Europe could have any two major powers allied or against each other. If this happens when the Spainish navy is most powerful, say 1740 ATL, then a Spainish invasion is possible, if not plausible.

Spain and Denmark were actually at war during the first part of the 30 Years War and there were naval skirmishes between the two countries in the Northern Sea. A Catholic England TL or an Armada Successful TL could lead to an Anglo-Spanish adventure in Jutland during the 1620s, especially if there is a Habsburg land invasion from the south at the same time.

Once, in a game of EU 3 as Spain, I vassalized and then annexed Sweden. I then got in a war with Denmark, but revolts in Scandinavia crippled my attack.

If either the Dutch or the 30 Years' War go better for Spain, Denmark mifght not look so outlandish a target. A naval invasion from Belgian ports is not at all far-fetched if the Dutch navy does (or can) not interfere, and Spanish troops would not meet marked resistance between the Lower Rhine and the Elbe if they really meant it.

Of courser, 17th century warfare kinda favoured the defender, but I can't see any greater implausibility in it that, say, an attempt to land troops in England or a Durtch involvement in naval warfare in the Mediterranean.

I think it would be more correct to say the Imperials occupied Jutland during the 30 Years War, and by that war, the Emperor was of the Austrian Habsburgs.

Thank you, Herr Obvious, for that obscure factoid. I shall go share it with all the other 17th century geeks on the board.

Yes, that was a joke.

But the Spanish were involved in the war and might have been involved in the occupation of Jutland.

Quite easy to do really I think with Denmark being one of the main protestant nations and Spain being defender of Catholocism.
A lot of what people have mentioned could work; after stopping the Dutch herectics they then go for Denmark. Perhaps as a way to surround Germany.

Also thinking about it...Wasn't a Danish king or prince or something one of Elizabeth I's main possible suitors?

There was a Spanish division in Denmark in Napoleonic Wars, I think it consisted of their best troops and when Napoleon decided to invade Spain it revolted and most of it made it to the coast where it was evacuated by the RN.

What if for some reason Napoleon instead decides to replace the Danish king, etc; perhaps Spain is offered some territory (Spanish Holstein anyone?) in return for the Spanish division helping out.

Yes, the army of the Count of La Romana. Part of it was embarked in british ships and sent back to Spain. The rest was captured and had to join Napoleon's army and march to Russia...
