Challenge: Russia in NATO

Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to have Russia join NATO by the present day with a POD after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Bonus points for getting all the other former Soviet republics to join as well.

Alright, I'll go with The Most Recent POD, I can Justify ...

Vice President Joe Biden, Chosen Over Edwards as Kerry's Running-Mate, Delivers Working-Class Ohio for The Democrats!

President Kerry, Then goes on to Patch up The Damage with The USA's Relationship to Russia as a Result of The Iraq War ...

Thus, as Talks with The Caucasian Republics go Forward, Russia is Brought More and More Often into NATO Planning Meetings; Ultimately Culminating with The Formal Induction of ALL of The Former Soviet Republics into The Organization, Timed to Coincide with The 65th Anniversary of D-Day on 6 June 2009!

POD H.W. Bush wins vs Clinton, assasinated shortly thereafter.

As Russia's economy crumbles, President Quayle (somewhat of a space enthusiast ) puts together a stimulus package for Russia to encourage economic stablity and jobs for potentially dangerous Russia rocket scientists.

Large scale programes including some space programes, sub hulls, and other various make work/R&D programes.

Later as finiancal crisis worsens programe expanded to include US goverment backed investment in Siberia and buyout of roubles.

WIth less traumatic economic conditions Yelsin remains in control.

With demostation of US goodwill, less concern about securtiy situation.

Russia remains more democratic.

Later when NATO expansion leads to RUssian concerns, instead of being dismissed, they are countered by quiet suggestions that Russia petetion for admission,

which they do.

NATO now basically includes northern third of globe.

Maybe a POD could be built on a nastier collapse of the USSR. Where the Russian state and surrounding republics are even weaker or more disorganized than in OTL. This combined with a more aggressive China might push Russia into NATO's camp or NATO and the US want to keep Russia stable lest seeing the entire continent collapse into anarchy.

Even if noone likes my POD, :(

I still think you need a more democratic Russia, with better relations with the US and without the economic energy blackmail games.

I liked your POD Corbell. There was a thread a while back that came to the conclusion that Quaile, based on his pre-Bush record, was considerably smarter and more savvy than how he is remembered.

On topic, the novel The Bear and the Dragon by Tom Clancy features the Chinese politburo preparing to invade Siberia after various irrelevant-to-the-discussion incidents. In a last-ditch effort to dissuade the Chinese, Russia joins NATO.

THanks, I was just trying to get a differant president than OTL.

Since neither H.W. Bush nor CLinton tried anything like this, I felt this was the simplest change.

And the space advocacy plays to my own pet interests.:)

Ok Russia's economy got about as bad as it could get under Yeltsin and his merry band of looters.

Everyone hated Yeltsin if he stayed in power beyond 2000 there would’ve been a revolt.

US goodwill toward Yeltsin did more harm than good, as any money invest gets embezzled & some US companies or officials collaborated in this process as the Russian state during the 1990’s was a pyramids scheme

Also Russia was never ''democratic'' under Yeltsin it was in a state of anarchy & the state was in near disintegration. crime & corruption were rampant.

The only real way for Russia to join NATO is if an alternate US government is in charge, which is much more inclined toward treating Russia as a equal and not poking the bear by setting up military bases in the former USSR & tearing up the anti-ballistic missile treaty. It should be remembered Putin was rather co-operative with the US in his early years in power, until W basically screwed him over several times.
