Challenge: Robert Taft wins the Presidency in 1940

Hitler decides to hold back from Poland until after the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November, 1940.

Hmmm, why would he do that? That's the kicker.

But I think most would agree that with no WWII then FDR would have a hard time seeking the presidency for a third term. If Taft is the GOP nominee in such a scenario then he probably faces someone like James Farley, or one of the midwestern Dem governors. Maybe even Garner. The conservative Ohioan then has a 50/50 shot.

That'd be hard. Maybe some event to make Lindbergh's America First movement more popular.

Hitler's not going to chance his mind about Poland this side of assassination.

You could just have FDR decide not to seek a 3rd term out of precident I guess. Garner isn't exactly a powerhouse canididite and Taft is well respected by most.

It would have been very hard for a Republican to win the presidency in 1940. The GOP was associated with the Great Depression and high unemployment. FDR beat Wilkie by 449 electoral votes to 89 electoral votes.

Perhaps British intelligence plants evidence of communist and/or pro-fascist sympathies in the press, tarnishing FDR's image, and making it possible for a challenger to oppose him in the primaries? The Supreme Court standing up to his court packing scheme? Republicans coming up with a coherent policy for Europe and economic recovery to alleviate the double-digit unemployment?

Why, may I ask, would Winston Churchill authorize something like this?

British intelligence or Axis intelligence?

"The Supreme Court standing up to his court packing scheme?"

Wait, what?
