Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to make Michael Portillo prime minister by the present day with a POD after the Brighton bombing.

1990: John Smith takes over from Kinnock as more credible Labour Leader.

92: Major loses to Smith who then enjoys a Black Wednesday

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Wednesday

97: Thatcher storms back with Chancellor Portillo, as Labour are tarred with the same "Economic Fuckwit" brush that afflicted the Tories OTL

00: Portillo wins Tory leadership election held after Thatcher is said to have sailed the ship into safe waters.

Don't know what happens after that tho.

Unlikely that the Thatch decides to fight on, even more unlikely that the knives out for her in the Tory party let her.

1992: Major beats Kinnock, Kinnock resigns. Replaced by John Smith, who dies in 1994 and is himself replaced by Tony Blair.

1997: Blair beats Major, Major resigns, replaced by William Hague.

2001: Blair beats Hague, Hague resigns.

Tory Leadership election is contested by Portillo, IDS, Ken Clarke, Michael Ancram, and David Davis.

Last ballot is Portillo vs IDS vs Ken Clarke. Portillo makes an appeal to Thatcherite's and Euroskeptics, claiming that with his experience and loyalty he is better placed than IDS, the other standard bearer of Thatcherism, to represent them.

In the last ballot, Clarke finishes first, but IDS and Portillo swap places.

Ken Clarke and Portillo's names go forward to the wider membership vote. Portillo becomes Tory leader.

2005: Portillo leads the Tories to a third successive defeat, but only by 30 seats, leaving them in striking distance for 2010. His front bench includes the new 'Brown and Blair', Cameron and Osborne, at the Home Office and the Treasury.

2008: Gordon Brown replaces Tony Blair as Prime Minister.

April 6th, 2010: Gordon Brown dissolves parliament.

Does Portillo have a chance of suceeding Thatcher over Major? He's leading a doomed enterprise but he'll probably do better in the public opinion than the Grey Man
