Would an election that happened close to 100 years go be modern though? If TR is elected in 1916 that's only 20 years after Grover Cleveland left office.

well the modern period started in 1453 so its all relative

Truman wins the popular vote in '48, Dewey flubs up Korea, and then Truman is re-elected in '52.

Gerald Ford wins the Republican nomination in 1980.

Try this one on for size:

George W Bush loses to Kerry in 1984, who then contends with a financial crisis much like OTL but a year earlier, another terrorist attack circa 2006, a John Edwards scandal and a bungled response to Katrina in 2005. Bush runs again and wins.

Barak obama loses, the election this fall narrowly, and try to become president again 2016, stronger than ever a possibility.

That's my thought, too. If Romney gets in, it's entirely possible the country will be messed up enough that even Obama could win against him.
