You kinda have me stumped. Why would they ever do this? The Byzantines have already completely collapsed, and Iberia hasn’t been tied with them since the 5th century. There isn’t even really a national pride type deal either, because the Spanish, unlike the Russians, aren’t really tied to the Byzantines at all. The Russians might be the only ones I can think of that would do this.

Andreas Palaiologos marries Joanna the Mad (daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella)... Somehow.

Perhaps making it more appetibile for marriage by not selling the Eastern Roman imperial titles to everyone under the sun, and making him convert to Catholicism during his stay in Rome after the fall of the Roman Empire in the East.

Alternatively, let Andreas marry whoever and have a son, then marry that son to the first female heir of the Spanish throne available.

In the end the only way for it to happen is for a Palaiologos to sit on the Spanish throne and pick that flag as his/her standard... I think?

It's a little hard imo.

Well, if the flag is like one shown in one of the earlier posts, it does not make a slightest sense for Spain. And if it is one with a two-headed eagle, it is at that time already had been used by the HRE (since 1250) and Grand Duchy of Moscow (since 1472).

Any way for the Aragonese ruled Duchy of Athens play a role in this? Maybe they manage to survive slightly longer than the Byzantines and thus lay claim to the empire before getting kicked back to Iberia by the Ottomans. Unfortunately it's pre- Isabella and Ferdinand.
