Challenge: Make a successful MBT-70

During the 60s the USA and West Germany was trying to create a new Main Battle Tank, which prototype was named the MBT-70.

After several years of research, Germany left the project to go on with its own ambitions on tanks, which became the Leopard 2. There was too many problems with the tank, and it was reach the price of 1 Million dollars if they wanted to produce them (which would have been around 5 Million dollars for a tank today).

So, in 1972 the Project was dropped, and the MBT-70 was abandoned. Funds went into a different tank project, which became the M1 Abrams.

So here is the challenge:

Make the MBT-70 successful, and put into the army. What would have to happen? How would it preform in the wars that would happen in the years to come?

The MBT70 was cancelled about 5 minutes before Chobham Armour was developed, so if it was developed particularly the US version would have crappy armour and a crappy weapon.

Well ERA hadent rolled out for the Soviets yet, and they could use a 120mm like the Germans wanted instead of the gun missile (or alternately copy the Soviets and get a gun/missile system that actually works well). So the tank would probably be slaughtered by British tanks but it would be decent enough to compare against Soviets.

Actually it seems to be extremely similar to Soviet tanks oddly.
