1) UN/US task Force
2) Sudan/Rwanda/Somalia

I think it could work. A small, well trained squad against a genocidal warlord, defendign a small village which the warlord wants to destroy.

Chris: Eamonn Walker

Vin: Eric Bana

Bernado: Jason Stratham

Lee: Chow Yun-Fat

Harry: Antonio Banderas

Britt: Guy Pearce

Chico:

This is supposed to be one of the best westerns ever made. I wouldn't touch this movie with a ten-foot pole, unless Clint Eastwood is involved. Then it will be Oscar-bait.:p

I think we'll have to go younger for Bernardo. Though the others I'll totally go with.
(Let me guess...you wanted to stay with a baldy for Chris, didn't you? ;)) The only movie Yul Brenner even got close to Mag Seven coolness in as far as I'm concerned was Westworld.

Chris: Vin Diesel

Vin: Jason Statham

Bernardo: Guy Pearce

Lee: Shea Whigham (the con/heavy from Splinter)

Harry: Ben Foster (I'll be honest: after 3:10 to Yuma, for the good of the Western genre, I want this guy pegged as a Western actor from now until eternity.)

Britt: Sean Bean

Chico: Nicholas Gonzalez (the guy from the second Anaconda movie, but don't hold that against him)

Pros: Whigham, Foster, Bean, Pearce (probably) and Gonzalez are all affordable. They'll leave money in the budget for Diesel and Statham, and Pearce and Bean are still draws. Western fans will remember Foster, and horror fans might remember Whigham from Splinter.

Cons: Well...maybe they won't remember Foster or Whigham.

I'll bet a more modern version would work well. Something like a gangster in NYC or LA, terrorizing some neighborhood. Then the seven vigilantes (Vin Diesel and Jason Statham, don't care about the others) come in, and take down the gang. On one hand, I'll bet it'd piss off a little people who like the classic version ('course, the "classic" version was just a ripoff on the samurai flick "Seven Samurai" ;)). On the other, I think it'd work well on its own merit.

Ah...

...I'm glad you put in that second sentence...because I was going to point out the obvious fact that Fistful of Dollars was WAY better than Yojimbo. :p

I still think it should be a straight Western. People just don't remember how cool Westerns are because there have been so few made lately.

Remember that the film was a transplant of Akira Kurosawa's "The Seven Samurai" to the Western era.

I'm still defending my casting choice. Westerns just speak better to Americans than samurai I think.

I agree there the Japanese film is good but it's hard work watching it. I was just pointing out that the Western version was not the original.

Gotcha.

In my opinion, the same goes for Yojimbo. I personally thought Fistful of Dollars was better. Though Last Man Standing was just entertaining. I wouldn't say it was a well made movie like the other two versions of the story.

I agree completely. I tried watching Yojimbo once, and I believe I could only watch about 20 minutes of it. Not that I don't enjoy Japanese films (I love Heaven and Earth), just that one in particular was awful. I've never seen Seven Samurai or Magnificent Seven, actually, but I'm familiar with the premise and I know people who love it.

Didn't one of the Japanese film-makers make versions of Shakespeare's plays for much the same reason that Western, as in West rather than the cowboy film meaning of the word, made versions of Japanese stories.

Now, I haven't seen this movie, I admit (already sensing the trouble I'll be in for that statement), but I'm definitely getting the idea of what the movie was about.

The best place I can see this being set in is Los Angeles - major crime problem in some parts of town (pretty much everything between USC and Long Beach is infamous, with some justification), wealthy in other areas. Best time would be mid-1990s.

Storyline:

The Rodney King riots are a lot bigger and uglier than in OTL. The massive mess that follows forces the police into almost impotency, as crime gangs move in across most of LA, with police actively helping the gangs in some cases.

As Los Angeles in many areas falls into major crime problems, many local residents realize that they cannot rely on the police to defend them. Hence, they go to buy guns for themselves, and in the process ask Chris Adams, a former Army Ranger, to lead them. Adams turns them down, syaing that one man is not enough to stop the criminals. He eventually does recuit six other men to do the job - Vin, Bernardo, Lee, Harry, Brit and Chico.

The Seven begin to bond with many of the local residents, and begin to move from paid defenders to being both locals and in many cases lovers with the local population. The local big shot crime bosses, realizing that the local population has found some reliable, dangerous bodyguards, decides to try and drive them out.

Not expecting a full-blown war, the group decides to stay and finish the job rather than run away. They are assisted by a group of former local gangbangers, who provide both knowledge and firepower. They make a raid on the gangs' main stakeout to try and hit them before they attack, but this fails. They return to the local territory, only to be escorted out by the gangbangers.

The group decides that they have to finish this one way or another and returns to fight. The local residents realize that they can help and join in with whatever firepower they can get their hands on, and the police, realizing how bad this has gotten, now decide to intervene. They are unable to do much but clean up the mess, however.

Chris and Vin leave afterward, stopping only to pay respects and the graves of their fallen comrades.
