Challenge-Japanese Madagascar

Alright, thats your challenge, to get a Japan that is powerful enough to control Madagascar, and hold it until decolonization if and when that ever occurs. POD must be no earlier then 1775

End isolation earlier and the Japs would be out playing with the big boys, perhaps using inter-European war to intervene on one side to grab colonies.

I read one TL where the Entente loses WW1 and the Japanese (as is traditional) grab much of the French colonial empire, including Madagascar as well as the usual Indochina. Rather far-fetched, though.

I remember this TL I think. "A Place in the Sun". Basically, to keep the Central Powers from taking Madagascar in WWI, the Japanese are given control of the colony by French forces.

Strangely, everytime I've played either HoI2 or Making History, I can get the Japanese to invade Madagascar fairly easily. I guess if Japan fights a Russo-Japanese-style war with France in the aftermath of WWI, Japan could, possibly take Madagascar, but that would most likely involve the Japanese taking Indochina and the Indian Ocean Islands...

I know this does not fall under the POD, but I recall hearing that Japan considered demanding Madagascar from Vichy france in addition to french indo china

The OP made no limit on the POD besides that it had to be after 1775, so your idea would be valid.

actually a Japanese-colonized Africa would be very interesting.

Japanese Congo would be interesting an extension of the "Congo can be anybody's" AH Cliche.

However, the only way into the Cliche Congo is through that tiny area north of Angola. So to get there, Japan would have to sail ALL the way around South Africa, which isn't going to be easy.

Japan was one of the world's most advanced and most powerful countries in 1600. If they wanted to take the whole Pacific, they could have.
In 1775? Madagascar is a disease ridden island with no obvious trade goods. New Caledonia for nickel, Nauru for phosphate, what else?

Well, it doesn't have to be in the WWII era. Let's say *Meiji restoration happens in 1820s or 30s, and Japan can join in the scramble for Africa.

The Japanese wouldn't be invited in the 'scramble for Africa'. If it wants to succeed it would have to concentrate in Asia first. Even with an early *Meiji restoration it doesn't have the power to project outside of the Far East. There are Greater Powers that can easily keep them out.
