Challenge: Have Confederate troops occupy DC.

Have troops from the slave-holding Confederate States of America, occupy Washington DC during the Civil War. The longer the better. Extra bonus points if it's later in the War.

They directly assaulted the City in 1864, when they had already no real chance to win. Doubt they could hold It. Iam not a ACW expert.

Very unlikely, but here's my attempt: Early's raid looks a lot scarier than it actually is (poor Federal intelligence, weather, w/e), Grant retreats to help the defense of the capital. Lee pursues and gets lucky in skirmishes against the retreating enemy, Grant gets hit with stray fire(really cliche, I know) and his army routs. Word reaches Washington about the rout and the incoming Confederate reinforcements so the evacuation is ordered. Lee marches in.

Now, this is incredibly unlikely, requires ridiculous levels of luck, and is probably ASB, and Lee cannot hope to hold the city due to lack of manpower and supplies.

Early's raid is the best bet for this. Had Lewis Wallace not managed to delay Early at Monocacy with a step-up of communication with Grant, then it's possible that Early could be facing the 9,600 men under Major General Christopher Auger in the DC defenses without any Union reinforcements for a few days. The XXII corps was recorded at 31,000 men under arms within the vicinity, but it was largely just a paper tiger and nothing else, as most of the soldiers were 100 day militia, veterans from the reserve corps (injured men that could do second-third rated duties.) and armed federal clerks.
