Challenge: Germany sucessfully test a nuclear bomb in the 1940s

Your challenge, should you decide to take it, is to devise an scenario where Germany test a nuclear bomb of her own design no later than December 31st, 1949 with POD(s) no earlier than January 1st, 1901. Bonus points if at least two European countries are comunist at the time of the test.


Hint: The POD is way before Hitler's rise to power ;)

Germany lose but due to some butterfly in US politics, the US turn isolationistic. However, the US recognise the need for Germany to be able to defend themself from a Soviet attack and let Germany develop their own nukes. They had a few good scientists after all.

I think US reaching further to the east might be a good starting point for such a senario.

Do you mean that Germany losses WWI? I mean, I don't think Germany could develop an A bomb before 1950 after losing OTL WWII

EDIT: I mean, the POD is after 01/01/1901. The ATL might not have an OTL WWII - perhaps not even a WWI. And Germany - as well as all the other countries - could have several different types of government

No. After WWII. If they get enough US support that is. That could be everything up to complete systems.
