Challenge; Franco - Japanese War - Pre 1940

Challenge is to have a Franco - Japanese War Sometime between the end of the Russian - Japanese War and the beginning of WW 2.

this has to be a Separate War [not GW or GW2] on the Scale of Sino-Japanese of 1895, or Russo-Japanese of 1905.

I'll allow this War to take the place of Russian war if nessacary.

?Results, and Aftereffects????

France tried to take Taiwan from China in the late 1800s. If they had succeeded that might have set the stage for a war. Not sure what would have sparked it or when it would have happened. Maybe the French help resupply the Russians during the Russo-Japanese war? Probably not. The Japanese weren't cocky enough at that point to tackle both the French and Russians. Maybe after World War I? The early 1930s? Doesn't seem likely in any case, but a French Taiwan makes it somewhat more likely.

Japan tries to expand its influence (aggresively) in Indochina in the early 1930s, France sees this as a threat to its colonial power, so a conflict breaks out in Hanoi between pro-Japanese forces and the French colonial administration.

Here's another:

The French Expedition to Korea in 1866 is successful in opening up the country to foreign trade and intervention. France is granted the port of Busan, and maintains a naval base as well as a sector of the city of Incheon. Fresh from their victory over the Russians in 1905, the Japanese provoke an attack by the French Navy in Incheon Harbour, leading to a Japanese invasion of the French Territory of Chosun and the Empire of Korea. Japan might have a harder time beating the French here, especially if they are backed up by the British (who could be potentially angry at the Japanese over the matter of coastal ports and trade in China.) If the Japanese attacked in 1907, this would also allow the Triple Entente to fight their first war together, using the powerful Franco-British navies and using Russia as a platform for land operations.

It was my understanding that the full effect of the treaties that lead to the Entente would only come into affect if one or more parties were at war with Germany/Austria-Hungry.

Also keep in mind the Japan-Korea Annexation Treaty of July 1907; which made Korea essentially a vassal of the Japanese, and the Anglo-Japanese Alliance of 1902 (renewed in 1905) which included a mutual-defense pact should either 'becomes involved in war with more than one Power.'

I was think of Japan taking Hianan along with Taiwan in the 1895 war. This bring Japan into contact with French Indochina, and French Dominated Southern coast of China.

the 1905 Russian War is then fought in Sakhalin, with Russia getting Manchuria.
This means the Army loses power, with the Navy moving into top dog spot.

Sometime around 1912~13 tensions between the Japanese in Hianan, and the French in Southern China, erupts into war.

Unlike the 1905 Russian War, All the Europeans have observers, and reports about Modern War, land on the desks back in Europe.
